2008 sees me planning my next one-man show and applying for grants and residencies.
My fifth one-man exhibition in The Townhall Arts Centre, Charlestown, Co. Mayo, was a great success with record numbers of visitors coming to the new exhibition space. It was called ANIMALES! and took its central theme from my observations of people and animals, or more importantly, lack of contact with animals. Animals were the first subject matter of early human art in cave paintings. Aside from pets, most urbanised Westerners have very little contact with living animals. We eat processed food and have to deal with pests, but seldom deal with a live animal. The show therefore examines the use of animals as symbols, myth and in language.">To view ANIMALES! click here
The 2007 Dublin Fringe Festival, as well as being the premier festival of theatre in Ireland, displayed many artworks outside normal gallery spaces. An exhibition of lanterns was hung from streetlights along the River Liffey boardwalk. The theme for last year was 'Dublin inside out', so I showed a pot of Coddle, the tasty stew of bacon and sausages, in a clear pot so that the ingredients could be seen. The general idea in 2006 was to have a wish for Dublin incorporated into the design. My wish was to have better bicycle lanes for the city and I combined 2 classic designs in a wity pun called Potholefilla. The lantern is a box made of translucent polycarbonate measuring 100 x 80 x 60cm. My lantern was still in situ above the nearest coffee kiosk to O' Connell Bridge on the boardwalk up until recently but was mysteriously removed. I don't know its whereabouts, do you? The work of another lantern artist, Patrick Stack, can be viewed at Cubic Dublin.com.
A fellow graduate from the class of 2006 in IADT has set up her own website, KellyOConnor.ie while other graduates have set up the collective , Moxie and are actively exhibiting.
