Portrait of Katie Taylor and Alanna Audley-Murphy,
(after Holbein) Oil and acrylic on canvas, 38 x 40 inches (2002)
This double portrait was painted to commemerate the event that made boxing history when Katie and Alanna became the first
females to box under the auspices of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA). They fought on Hallowe'en 2001.
Katie won the bout and has gone on to be a world champ. I was inspired to paint them when I heard the two talk on the
Marian Finnucane Show, then a morning broadcast, just hours before the fight. I travelled to Bray to meet Katie and her
trainer dad, and to the heart of Belfast to meet Alanna. The composition is based in the sixteenth century painting by Hans
Holbein called The Ambassadors
